Plans for New Place Maillardville Community Centre Approved

by Sarah Rossi |

COQUITLAM, B.C., May 28, 2019 – Plans for the new Place Maillardville Community Centre were approved by Council yesterday, bringing the project one step closer to reality. The new facility will provide an enhanced space to continue to serve the growing and changing needs of the neighbourhood.

New and Enhanced to Meet Neighbourhood Needs
The future Place Maillardville Community Centre is proposed to be approximately 2,000 square metres (22,000 square feet) in size, which would enhance the amenities and services offered within a scale, budget and size appropriate for the neighbourhood.

Proposed program spaces and amenities include:

  • a single-court gymnasium,
  • multi-purpose spaces providing flexible space, with server kitchen
  • a lounge for seniors/youth
  • flex space,
  • teaching kitchen,
  • meeting rooms,
  • child-minding space,
  • administrative offices,
  • underground parking, and
  • outdoor space including a plaza and park space adjoining Laval Square.

Next Steps
Construction is expected to start in early 2020 with the new facility planned to be open by the end of 2021. The new building will be situated on the currently vacant portion of the property, as well as on adjacent City-owned land, which will allow for current programs and services to continue in the old building during construction.

About Place Maillardville
Place Maillardville Community Centre is a City-owned recreation facility serving approximately 8,000 to 10,000 people, and has been a cornerstone of the Maillardville neighbourhood for 40 years. As an aging asset with modest construction, the building is under pressure to continue to serve the diverse and dynamic needs of the area.
