Help Shape Coquitlam’s Strategic Plan

by Sarah Rossi |

COQUITLAM, B.C., May 29, 2019 What will be important to Coquitlam in the next 10 to 15 years? What kind of services will its residents and businesses need?

As Coquitlam launches an update of its Strategic Plan – the foundation for the City’s other plans, actions and operations – the City is asking residents and other stakeholders to imagine their community in 2032 and share their vision through a variety of different channels.

The 2020 plan will guide the City’s activities over the next 10-15 years, and this year’s update will give residents and community stakeholders a chance to ensure their priorities are heard as the City moves forward.

Many Opportunities to Get Involved and Provide Input

Opportunities for input include a 10-minute survey at www.coquitlam.ca/stratplan, which is open until July 31. Survey respondents over age 16 have the opportunity to enter a draw for a $100 Visa gift card, to be awarded on Aug. 2.

Pop-up displays will also be set up at various locations and events throughout the spring and summer, including recreation complexes, Coquitlam Centre, Coquitlam Celebrates Canada Day, select Neighbourhood Nights and the Coquitlam Farmers Market.

Residents will also be invited to send postcards to the future and share their thoughts on a Scrawl Wall.

As well, the City will survey staff and provide opportunities for input to Council’s various advisory committees over the coming months.

Details on all the scheduled events can be found at www.coquitlam.ca/stratplan

Why is Strategic Planning Important?

The Strategic Plan outlines the decision-making framework for the City. The plan’s high-level vision – currently, “Coquitlam in 2021 will be a community of neighbourhoods within a vibrant city where people choose to live, learn, work and play” – filters down into strategic goals, which are reflected in the actions of the City departments’ annual Business Plans.

The five current strategic goals are: Strengthen Neighbourhoods; Expand Local Jobs, Local Prosperity; Increase Active Participation and Creativity; Enhance Sustainability of City Services and Infrastructure; and Achieve Excellence in City Governance.

With new residents and businesses coming to Coquitlam each year, the new Strategic Plan will reflect a changing community and adapt to new trends and challenges, to ensure the City continues to deliver effective programs and services in the years to come.

Once the public consultation period wraps up in August, staff will compile the information and present a consultation summary and preliminary findings to Council in fall 2019.

Visit www.coquitlam.ca/stratplan for more background and to complete the online survey.
