Pop-up Youth Park Summer Kick-off

by Caitlin Osborne |

COQUITLAM, BC, June 26, 2019 Coquitlam youth are invited to kick-off summer at the Pop-up Youth Park opening, this Friday, June 28 from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. in Mundy Park (641 Hillcrest St.).

Featuring a modified shipping container as the hub, the Pop-up Youth Park will have portable outdoor furniture, a temporary sand volleyball court, mobile bike track, basketball hoops and a new sports lending library with gear for ball hockey, pickleball, lacrosse and basketball.

Access to the Pop-up Youth Park and all the activities are free thanks to the generous support of Coquitlam’s 2019 Summer Youth Partner – Coast Capital Savings.

New Pop-Up Park Responds to Youth Feedback

The Pop-up Youth Park is a new initiative based on feedback gathered from outreach as part of developing Coquitlam’s Youth Strategy. According to the feedback, young people in Coquitlam are looking for convenient, low-cost and engaging opportunities with flexible times and commitment levels. Ideas included “activity destinations” – friendly, inclusive and dynamic environments with concurrent activities taking place.

Youth will help plan and run the site with support from Park Spark staff. Local high school students have been recruited to help set priorities and act as volunteer organizers. The park will be staffed with pop-up activities Tuesday to Saturday, 2 – 7 p.m., with the lounge furniture, hammocks and other passive elements open during park hours (daily, dawn to dusk).

Summer Kick-off Event

  • Friday, June 28, 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.
  • Mundy Park (near the lacrosse box), 641 Hillcrest St.

Activities include a garden mixology class, where youth can make refreshing beverages using easy-to-grow garden herbs. The first 100 youth to participate will receive a free infuser water bottle to take home with them.

Staff will lead active games such as a basketball shoot-out, badminton, volleyball, jumbo soccer and disc golf. Other activities like giant checkers, giant jenga, a pop-up beach and an acrylic paint pour station will also be available.
