Smokers Face Hefty Fines in Coquitlam Parks

by Colleen Smith |

COQUITLAM, BC, August 9, 2019 – Don’t let our parks go up in smoke—individuals caught smoking in Coquitlam parks during summer months will face a $500 fine.

Not only is smoking, including e-cigarettes and cannabis is banned in City parks, but the fine—normally $150—increases to $500 during summer months due to heightened fire risk. The City’s Smoking Control Bylaw No. 3037, 1996 states that no one is allowed to smoke in any of the City’s parks at any time.

Littering of cigarette butts on the ground or out of a vehicle window can also result in a fine of $150.

City Steps Up Enforcement During Summer Months
Coquitlam Parks Bylaw Officers are stepping up their patrols — especially along the Coquitlam River trails and Mundy Park —and offenders will be ticketed.

All residents and park visitors should take precautions against accidental fires and be alert to signs of fire. Report any signs of smoke or fire by calling 9-1-1 immediately.
