Celebrate Cottonwood Park Upgrades Sept. 10

by Caitlin Osborne |

COQUITLAM, BC, Sept. 4, 2019 Burquitlam residents are invited to celebrate recent upgrades to Cottonwood Park with free family activities and refreshments on Sept. 10.

Set for 5 to 7 p.m., the event will mark the addition of new play equipment, waterplay area, a youth area, picnic shelter and other park amenities, located at 672 Aspen St. between Cottonwood Avenue and Foster Avenue.

Activities will include face painting, balloon twisting and a performance by ventriloquist Kellie Haines. Refreshments will be served, and TCBY Yogurt and a food truck will also be on hand.

New Amenities Added

The improvements, which took a year to complete, were the first of several anticipated phases that could eventually see the park grow to 11.5 acres (4.7 hectares). Phase 1A increased the developed area of the park from 1.35 acres (0.55 hectares) to 2.5 acres (one hectare), and added:

  • A children’s playground with areas for younger and older children, equipment for all abilities and seating;
  • A water play area with elements for quiet and active play, and perimeter seating;
  • A youth activity and social area with seating, skateboarding elements and a basketball hoop;
  • A covered picnic shelter;
  • A washroom near the playground, spray area and picnic areas; and
  • A paved parking lot.

More Park Expansion Planned

This first phase of park expansion took Cottonwood Park a step towards becoming a community-level park. The next phase is anticipated to begin in 2020 and increase the park size to about 5.0 acres (2.0 hectares). It is planned to include a combined ball diamond and sports field, a multi-sport court, and outdoor games tables.

Cottonwood Park is eventually planned to be 11.5 acres (4.7 hectares) in size. The size of the park was determined during the development of the Burquitlam-Lougheed Neighbourhood Plan, in recognition of the area’s rapid growth, development and demand for outdoor recreation services.
