Volunteer to Become a Snow Angel this Winter

by Ashley Scott |

COQUITLAM, BC, Nov. 20, 2019 – Interested in volunteering your time and helping your neighbours? See if you have what it takes to become a Snow Angel.

Coquitlam is ramping up its annual recruitment of volunteers ready to shovel snow for those in the community who are unable to clear the sidewalks next to their home, as required in the City’s boulevard maintenance bylaw.

See If You Have What It Takes to Become a Snow Angel

When the snow starts to fall, Coquitlam’s Snow Angels slide into action. Here are four qualities of a Snow Angel.

  • Good fitness: Shoveling is great exercise – it raises your heart rate and tones large muscle groups. Bundle up and enjoy exercising outdoors in a winter wonderland.
  • Desire to help others in need: Nothing feels better than lending a helping hand to those in need. Bonus – youth can use the program to fulfill their community service hours for graduation.
  • Determination to make a real impact: Create the kind of community and world you want to live in. Keep your city safe. Slippery sidewalks are a hazard for everyone – particularly for seniors, those with mobility challenges and parents with strollers.
  • Desire to connect and make memories: Volunteering allows you to meet people from all walks of life. Involve your family and friends – start a new winter tradition.

Snow Angel Requirements

Coquitlam residents 16 years of age or older, and capable of shoveling snow, can sign up. Once approved for the program, volunteers receive training and equipment, including a shovel, toque and scarf.

Snow angels are only required to clear City sidewalks – not private walkaways and driveways – from one to two assigned homes. Shoveling must be complete within 10 hours after the end of every snowfall. You have the choice to work alone or with others, but all participants must complete the application process, including an orientation session (with shoveling training) and reference and criminal record checks.

Volunteers are needed throughout Coquitlam. Start the process to become a Snow Angel, today! coquitlam.ca/snowangels

If you can’t commit your time to being a Snow Angel, please be a good neighbour and help out those on your street who may have mobility concerns. This may include shoveling snow, garbage set-out and other physical tasks.

How to Get Connected with a Snow Angel

The Snow Angels service is available to Coquitlam residents who are 65 years of age or older or have a physical disability, and are unable to clear the snow from their adjacent City sidewalk.

Information about the Snow Angels program and requirements for volunteers and recipients can be found at coquitlam.ca/snowangels. The program can also be reached through the hotline at 604-927-6922 or communityservices@coquitlam.ca.
