Coquitlam 2016 55+ BC Games Update

by Kevin Henkelman |

COQUITLAM, BC, June 23, 2015 – In response to rumours regarding the 2016 55+ BC Games, the City of Coquitlam advises there has been no decision or direction from Council to withdraw from hosting the 2016 55+ BC Games.

In 2014, the City of Coquitlam was awarded the 2016 55+ BC Games to be held from August 25 – 29, 2016.
Coquitlam recently learned that the City of Vancouver had been awarded the Americas Masters Games in 2016. This event will take also place in August and will overlap with the 55+ BC Games planned to be hosted in Coquitlam.

As both the Americas Master Games and the 55+ BC Games offer similar sports and target similar athletes and audiences, Coquitlam is concerned about the impact of this conflict and its ability to host a successful 55+ BC Games in 2016. Given the likely similarities between the two major sporting events, Coquitlam’s ability to attract participants, volunteers, sponsors and spectators, would be compromised by the larger, international event being held in Vancouver at the same time.

Coquitlam City staff are continuing to work with the BC Games Society and BC Seniors Games Society to identify options and solutions that would allow the City to proceed in the best interest of the community and regional sport.
