Proposal to Increase Fines for Violating Watering Restrictions

by Kevin Henkelman |

COQUITLAM, BC, July 21, 2015 – Individuals caught violating watering restriction regulations in Coquitlam may soon face escalated fines.

The City’s Water Shortage Response Plan Bylaw No. 3701, 2005, currently only provides for a $75 fine for any violation of the Bylaw.

As such, staff are proposing an amendment to the Bylaw that would allow for escalating fines that increase incrementally as the water restrictions reach higher stages.

If passed, the fines in the current Stage 3 restrictions would be $300 ($250 if paid within 14 days).

Warnings are no longer being issued in Stage 2 or 3, so residents caught violating the watering regulations would automatically be assessed these fines.

Residents who see someone violating the watering restriction regulations can contact Engineering Customer Service 24 / 7 at 604-927-3500. To help facilitate enforcement, residents are encouraged to contact Engineering while the violation is taking place.
