New Turf Field at Dr. Charles Best

by Kevin Henkelman |

COQUITLAM, BC, Wednesday, September 30, 2015 – Coquitlam has recently resurfaced the artificial turf field at Dr. Charles Best Secondary School (2525 Como Lake Avenue).

The new field is another way the City is working towards its strategic goals of increasing active participation in sport and recreation, and enhancing the sustainability of City infrastructure.

The new surface is made from all synthetic materials, the same as the old turf field. It has a life span of 8 years and cost $1 million to build.

The need for a new field surface was identified in the 2013 Coquitlam Sports Field Strategy and as an “A” priority in Coquitlam’s 2015 Business Plan. The replacement comes as part of regular lifetime maintenance.
In 2004 the City and School District 43 entered into a 25-year term joint use agreement for the design, construction, maintenance, and shared use of an artificial sports field, change room, and support amenities such as parking at Dr. Charles Best Secondary School.

The artificial turf field and change rooms were built at a cost of $2.8 million using casino revenues and opened in April of 2005. The agreement with the School District allows for school use during school hours and shared use for community sports groups in the evenings and weekends. The City is responsible for the capital cost of replacement and rehabilitation of the facility.
