Coquitlam Reviewing Housing Choices in Southwest Neighbourhoods

by Michelle Frilund |

COQUITLAM, BC, Oct. 23, 2017 – Residents of Southwest Coquitlam could soon have increased access to housing options, thanks to a review of the City’s Housing Choices Program.

The Housing Choices Review will be a multi-phased process from 2017 to 2019. The intent of the review is to analyze and refine the Housing Choices Program with the goal of increasing the number of these types of infill projects, streamlining regulations and ensuring that the resulting projects continue to fit in with the surrounding neighbourhoods.

In Phase One, the City will be considering expanding backyard suites such as carriage houses and garden cottages into other single-family areas of Southwest Coquitlam, where these types of homes are not currently permitted. It will also include some preliminary background research to support future phases of review.

Residents of Southwest Coquitlam are encouraged to go online before Nov. 3 to learn more, and complete the survey at

Next steps in Phase One would include a report to Council where, if the proposed program changes are supported, the necessary amendments to the Zoning Bylaw, including an opportunity for public input, would be brought forward in early 2018.

The Housing Choices Program was adopted in 2011 to support varying household types and income levels. The program permits a range of attached and detached housing types such as garden cottages, carriage houses, narrow-lot single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes and quadruplexes in some residential neighbourhoods of Southwest Coquitlam.

From early 2011 to the end of 2016, the City of Coquitlam approved 98 Housing Choices projects providing 194 new housing units.
