Coquitlam Ready for First Winter Weather Blast

by Michelle Frilund |

COQUITLAM, BC, Nov. 2, 2017 – With 2017’s first winter snowfall forecasted this week at higher elevations, the City of Coquitlam is readying its resources and encouraging all residents to get winter wise.

The 2016/17 winter season was one of the most severe in recent years with significant snowfall accumulation sustained over three months. Following a review of the City’s snow response, additional tools and resources are being added to the City’s operations in order to enhance services this year.

Building on the recent success of using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to provide real-time information to City crews, City staff developed the Coquitlam Snow Response Request tool. Using this tool, available at, residents can report areas of concern which will, in turn, be provided to City staff in real-time.

Note that, while snow is falling, streets will still be plowed according to the City’s priority routes system focusing on primary roads (arterials, collectors, bus routes and access roads to schools) with local roads and lanes only being plowed as resources allow.

In addition to this new tool, investments have been made into new equipment for City vehicles. This includes equipping four more pick-up trucks with plows and salters and two additional brine tanks and controls. Additionally, more staff will be trained to operate plows in order to improve scheduling flexibility.

In the meantime, residents are encouraged to review the personal preparedness information at
