Grants Available for Coquitlam Block Parties

by Caitlin Osborne |

COQUITLAM, BC, May 17, 2018Want to get together with your neighbours this summer? Coquitlam residents planning block parties can apply to the City to receive a $150 grant, free insurance coverage and a play kit filled with toys to use at your block party event.

The City is offering $150 grants to encourage residents to plan block parties – fun social events that are a great way to meet neighbours, make new friends, and enhance community safety and awareness.

Block parties can take place in a variety of locations:

  • On your street,
  • On private property such as a common area or backyard, or
  • In a park (rental fees apply for park bookings).

The $150 grant may be used for food, activities, entertainment, equipment and venue rentals.

How to Apply

To apply for a grant, block party organizers must fill out a free application at least 15 days before their event. Criteria include:

  • Being a Coquitlam resident,
  • Hosting the block party in Coquitlam,
  • Providing the names of at least two neighbours who support the event and others who will be invited, and
  • Submitting a post-event evaluation and photo of your block party event.

Block Party Play Kits

New this year, block party organizers can request to borrow our activity play kits to use at their block party. The kits will include:

  • Balls
  • Cones
  • Frisbees
  • Skipping ropes
  • And even a rubber chicken!

Block Party Road Closures

To hold a block party on a City street, block party organizers must request a road closure  through the online application form (local and emergency road access must be maintained – free barricades will be provided). Approved applicants will also receive free special event liability insurance coverage.

The application form and complete details can be found at www.coquitlam.ca/blockparties.
