City Bolsters Community Projects and Events Through Spirit of Coquitlam Grants

by Sarah Rossi |

COQUITLAM, B.C., Dec. 4, 2018 – The City of Coquitlam will disburse more than $78,000 in support of projects and festivals proposed by local organizations through its Spirit of Coquitlam Grant Program.

The City received 16 applications through the program during the fall 2018 intake – one for an event in late 2018 and 15 for events or projects slated for 2019 – from a variety of non-profit and community organizations, including the Coquitlam Skating Club, Coquitlam Search and Rescue and Flip City Gymnastics. Of those applications, 10 projects have been selected to receive a total of $78,473 ($2,643.37 in 2018 and $75,829.40 in 2019). See backgrounder for a full list of fall 2018 Spirit Grant recipients.

As in previous years, the City selected projects to support that focus on events, celebrations or sports-hosting applications, and will provide support by funding initiatives that have public benefits and enrich the community.

All successful Spirit of Coquitlam grant projects must have outcomes that align with the City’s strategic goals and meet eligibility criteria outlined in the grant guidelines. A multi-departmental staff team reviews grant requests to ensure this alignment. Staff recommendations are then forwarded to Council for discussion and approval.

Since introducing the grant program in 2002, the City has provided $8.54 million to local organizations and non-profit groups.

About the Spirit of Coquitlam Grant Program
The Spirit of Coquitlam Grant Program was created in 2002 to assist local organizations in purchasing equipment for their use and development, hosting events and realizing capital projects to advance community goals. Since 2002, through this program, the City of Coquitlam has awarded more than $8.54 million to more than 200 different community organizations. Funding for the Spirit of Coquitlam Grant Program is derived from the Casino Host Agreement revenue. Full program details are available on the Spirit Grant webpage
