Archives Open for Business

by Rebecca Vaughan |

COQUITLAM, BC, February 6, 2019 The City of Coquitlam Archives is open for business at their new location at 1171 Pinetree Way, adjacent to the Coquitlam Public Library, City Centre branch.

The new location provides improved access to Coquitlam’s documentary heritage in one convenient location as well as display space. This key location and archival photos in the windows add visual interest for those who walk or travel along Pinetree Way. The photos present a timeline of Coquitlam’s history starting with North Road, Maillardville and Fraser Mills, and continuing around the building to show the historic Minnekhada Lodge and Town Centre Park taking shape.

The relocation is in keeping with the City’s Arts, Culture & Heritage Strategic Plan that was approved in 2017, which outlined an opportunity to expand the City Archives to accommodate a growing collection that includes both City and community records.

Reference appointment services can be made by phone or email 604-927-3900 or archives@coquitlam.ca.

Benefits of New Location

The Archives has holdings of more than 220 linear metres and approximately 750,000 photographs. Key features of the new spaceinclude:

  • a 550 square foot storage vault,
  • a gallery wall and display cabinet,
  • a reading room area for the public,
  • work stations, and
  • a scanning station.

The new space ensures that the City of Coquitlam Archives continues to fulfill its mandate to: ‘preserve and make accessible the records of enduring value of the City of Coquitlam and its predecessor administrative bodies;’ and to further support its vision that ‘residents of Coquitlam feel a strong sense of community and are aware of their city’s rich history and promising future.’

You can see before and after images of the transformation in the latest online exhibit at www.coquitlam.ca/onthemove.
