Coquitlam Rolls Out Free Public Wi-Fi at Major Parks and Facilities

by Caitlin Osborne |

COQUITLAM, BC, June 19, 2019 – Coquitlam continues to roll out free public Wi-Fi at major parks and outdoor facilities as part of a Technology Roadmap to enhance City services and “Smart City” technologies.

The City of Coquitlam is expanding its wireless internet network across outdoor public spaces, starting with Town Centre Park (east of Lafarge Lake) this month. The enhanced Wi-Fi services will be introduced across 14 new locations in 2019, including visitor hot spots such as Eagle Ridge Pool, Mundy Park, Spani Pool and Poirier Sport & Leisure Complex, to list a few.

Currently, free Wi-Fi is available at 13 indoor City facilities and two parks. This includes Mackin Park North and locations throughout Town Centre Park, including Percy Perry Stadium, Inspiration Garden and multiple sports fields.

This initiative is part of the City’s five-year Technology Roadmap, which follows in-depth consultation with City departments, a community Smart City survey, input from the Youth Council and assistance from an external technology consultant.

Coquitlam is already using a variety of Smart City technologies, including multiple e-services, new digital parking signage, traffic management systems and LED street lighting. This expansion of its public Wi-Fi will make it possible for people to stay connected while enjoying the City’s recreation facilities, festivals and events, and parks and trails.

Coquitlam’s Technology Roadmap

Using technology to improve how the City works and delivers services is at the heart of Coquitlam’s Technology Roadmap, which guides how the City will choose, acquire and use technology for the next five years. Implemented in February 2018, the plan calls for upgrades to existing systems as well as consideration of new and emerging technologies.

In addition to the expanded free, public Wi-Fi initiative, some initiatives under way or recently completed include:

  • Digital parking signage at Town Centre Park showing real-time parking availability;
  • Interactive touchscreen kiosks, or “Community Information Hubs,” with tourism, City and wayfinding information, starting with a pilot outside the Lafarge Lake-Douglas SkyTrain station to be launched in early summer;
  • A City services mobile app to be piloted in fall 2019, with the first phase providing program registration, event and facility information, customized event notifications, and integration with existing City online services and the Recollect waste collection app;
  • Virtual Reality technology for community planning  to engage the public and to visualize the look, feel and impact of proposed developments;
  • Video analytics software for smart traffic management.

The Technology Roadmap will help the City navigate the rapidly-changing world of technology by providing a method to identify, evaluate, prioritize and implement new solutions as they become available or cost-effective. Projects identified in the plan will be brought forward during the annual business plan and budgeting process.
