Coquitlam Launches Community Info Hub in City Centre

by Sarah Rossi |

COQUITLAM, B.C., June 21, 2019Everything you want to know about Coquitlam’s City Centre will be at your fingertips, thanks to the new interactive touchscreen Community Info Hub, located on Pinetree Way, outside the Lafarge Lake-Douglas SkyTrain station.

Launched as a pilot project, Coquitlam’s first Community Info Hub will showcase the many activities and amenities in the City Centre area and provide an accessible and easy-to-use access point for community information.

The interactive Community Info Hub is a tool for both residents and visitors – making it a valuable asset to the City’s tourism sector, as it supports Coquitlam’s Tourism Strategy objectives of increasing visitation and spend in Coquitlam by promoting local businesses, events and activities, City programs and assets – such as City parks and facilities – as well as other Coquitlam assets.

To view a brief video demonstrating the Community Information Hub, visit www.coquitlam.ca/smart

If the pilot is successful, the City may explore installing additional Community Info Hubs at strategic locations in Coquitlam.

Community Info Hub Features

The Community Information Hub features two 55-inch, double-sided multi-touch screens that are viewable in direct sunlight and designed for 24/7, all-weather operation in all climates.  The placement of graphics and interactive components has been designed with with accessibility in mind for those using mobility devices, such as scooters and wheelchairs.

However, the interactive map draws from Google Business. To have your City Centre business show up on the Community Info Hub, it must be listed on Google. See instructions here: www.google.com/intl/en_ca/business

Local event organizers can submit their eligible events to the calendar at www.visitcoquitlam.ca to ensure their upcoming events are profiled on the Community Info Hub’s calendar.

About Tourism Coquitlam

An integral part of Coquitlam’s Economic Development initiatives, Tourism Coquitlam supports sustainable economic growth through a community-based tourism program.

In 2015, the Coquitlam Tourism Strategy was created to present an overview, vision and priority activities to be implemented over the next five years, which includes increasing visitation and spend in Coquitlam by promoting local businesses, events and activities, City programs and assets such as City parks and facilities, as well as other Coquitlam assets.

Coquitlam’s Technology Roadmap

Using technology to improve how the City works and delivers services is at the heart of Coquitlam’s Technology Roadmap, which guides how the City will choose, acquire and use technology for the next five years. Implemented in February 2018, the plan calls for upgrades to existing systems, as well as consideration of new and emerging technologies.

In addition to the Community Info Hub, some initiatives under way or recently completed include:

  • Expanded free, public Wi-Fi initiative in City parks
  • Digital parking signage at Town Centre Park showing real-time parking availability in Town Centre Park – Parking Lot B;
  • A City services mobile app to be piloted in 2020, with the first phase providing program registration, event and facility information, customized event notifications, and integration with existing City online services and the Recollect waste collection app;
  • Virtual reality technology for community planning  to engage the public and to visualize the look, feel and impact of proposed developments;
  • Video analytics software for smart traffic management.

The Technology Roadmap will help the City navigate the rapidly-changing world of technology by providing a method to identify, evaluate, prioritize and implement new solutions as they become available or cost-effective. Projects identified in the plan will be brought forward during the annual business plan and budgeting process.
