New Washroom Facilities at Coquitlam Crunch Trail

by Colleen Smith |

COQUITLAM, BC, July 26, 2019 – Construction is now starting on two public washroom facilities at the lower level of the Coquitlam Crunch Trail at Lansdowne Drive.

In addition to the washroom facilities, the City will be installing a new outdoor water fountain with bottle filler and pet bowl along with landscaping improvements.

Construction begins late July 2019 with completion anticipated in early fall. Construction crews will work Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., with some occasional Saturday work.

Trail Improvements Will Involve Temporary Closures

Pedestrian access, traffic flow and parking will be temporarily impacted during early stages of construction with the City making every effort to minimize disruption. A portion of the Coquitlam Crunch between Eagle Ridge Elementary School and Lansdowne Drive will also be closed on occasion throughout the course of the project; however, access to the rest of the trail will remain unchanged. During the temporary closure a detour to the gravel pathway at the east will be provided. Signage and traffic control signs will be installed to direct traffic in a safe manner.

About the Coquitlam Crunch Trail Upgrades

In January 2018, City Council supported upgrades to the Coquitlam Crunch and approved, in principle, a multi-year plan that provides a vision for significant improvements along the route, including the addition of several new washroom facilities, new paved parking lots, viewing areas, outdoor exercise equipment, safer pedestrian street crossings, signage, and other trail amenities.

The Crunch – one of Coquitlam’s most-loved recreational trails – is a 2.2-km route with over 240 metres in elevation gain. During busy summer months, it sees as many as 52,000 visits per month. Trail enhancements are based on feedback from the community including a survey conducted in 2017 that involved more than 1,700 respondents.

Detailed design plans and budget will be provided as part of each phase prior to construction. The washroom installation project is part of Phase 1 improvements.
