A block party is a gathering of adjacent neighbours who want to connect and celebrate their community. It's a great way to get know your neighbours, build new friendships, and enhance the safety and awareness of your neighbourhood.

Who can host a block party?

You can host a block party if you are a Coquitlam resident and live in the neighbourhood.

Where can I host a block party?

Block parties must take place in Coquitlam and can be hosted in a variety of locations:  

  • on your street
  • on private property | backyard | common area, or
  • in a park (rental fees will apply)

Benefits of registering your block party

Once you complete the application and your block party is approved, you will:

  • Be eligible for the $150.00 Block Party Grant
  • Be able to request permission for a road closure to host a block party on your street;
    the City will provide the required roadway barricades free-of-charge
  • Receive free Special Event Liability Insurance coverage (if approved) for your block party
  • Opportunity to borrow a Block Party Play Kit with balls, frisbees, cones and even a rubber chicken! Available on a first come, first served basis.

Application Requirements

Below are a few requirements you will need to know before you complete your Block Party Application:

  • A Block Party Application must be submitted a minimum 15 business days prior to the day of the block party and include:   
    • The names of 2 supportive neighbours
    • A list of invited neighbours
    • Details for a road closure request, if applicable. Applicant must live within the road closure boundaries.
  • If you're planning to host a block party in a park, please submit your application at least ​30 days, prior to the day of the block party. Rental fees will apply.​
  • Sign the Block Party Agreement

Block Party Guidelines

Below are a few helpful guidelines to assist you with the planning of your block party.

  • Alcoholic beverages are not to be consumed on public property
  • Fireworks are not permitted unless you obtain a permit from Coquitlam Fire & Rescue
  • All recyclables and garbage need to be cleaned up at the end of the event
  • Any outdoor amplified sound (music played through speakers) must end by 10 p.m. 

Block Party Grant

In 201​8, the City is offering a $150.00 grant to approved block party organizers. The grant funds may be used for food, activities, entertainment, equipment and venue rentals; however, it cannot be used towards the purchase of alcohol.

Grant funds will be awarded based on the following:

  • An approved block party application
  • A submitted block party evaluation, no later than two weeks following the block party
  • ​An emailed photo of the block party
