Flowers---Spring-Garden-TipsSpring Garden Tips

It may seem like spring is a long ways away, but it's never too early to start preparations on your garden. Take a look below for some helpful suggestions to get you going on your garden.

  • Pull weeds before they flower and set seed.
  • Add a layer of mulch (wood chips, compost, mulched leaves) on your garden beds to suppress weeds and conserve water during the summer.
  • Prune back any branches damaged by winter weather.
  • Divide summer blooming perennials that require it. You can determine if they need dividing if they have an empty space in the middle or if you’ve noticed a decline in flowering.
  • Move any plants that need moving to ensure the roots are established before summer.
  • Plant early season vegetables like peas, spinach, swiss chard and cabbage.
  • Consider planting a variety of pollinator-friendly plants (like borage, coneflowers, marigolds, yarrow), and leaving some debris in the garden to create habitat for pollinators, such as bees, butterflies and beetles.
  • Enjoy the beautiful spring bulb displays around Coquitlam!
