Coquitlam’s Parks Recreation and Culture Master Plan identified the future need for a comprehensive multi-use community recreation centre to be placed in the Burke Mountain Village neighbourhood area.  This community centre is anticipated to be open by 2026, and will include a variety of programs and uses.

The population of the Northeast Neighbourhood Area was documented to be 12,100 people in the 2016 Census. Population projections show that this area may have a population of 21,000 people by 2026, growing to 39,000 by 2046.

The City is working to plan a facility that will meet the needs of current and future residents of the community.

Process to date

The City hosted a community survey  between November 18 and December 11 and presented the results to Council 823 responses were collected, and the findings of that survey  are attached to staff’s report to Council-in-Committee on February 10, 2020.

What’s Next

The survey was the beginning of a full planning process for the Northeast Community Centre, . Through analysis of the data received, staff identified a need for further community consultation, and staff will therefore be visiting a variety of local groups and Council Committees, as well as planning a visioning workshop for the spring of 2020.

Staff are also working with an architecture firm to develop a stronger understanding of the opportunities for the proposed community centre site.

A public open house will follow in fall 2020 with an opportunity to comment about the proposed community centre program concept.

The consultation feedback, together with site and technical analysis and application of community planning best principles, will help inform the community centre program concept for Council’s consideration that is anticipated to be presented to Council in early 2021.   Design, permits and construction will follow and the Centre is targeted to open in 2026.
