Coquitlam is in the final design stage for the replacement of the Place Maillardville Community Centre.  The detailed design will be ready for Council approval in Spring 2020, with construction proposed to start in Summer 2020.  Construction will be phased to ensure continued operation of the existing community centre until the new building is ready for occupancy, followed by demolition of the 40-year old existing building and completion of the public plaza and park space.

What’s in Store for Place Maillardville Community Centre?

Place Maillardville has been a cornerstone of the Maillardville neighbourhood for 40 years, and this aging facility can no longer effectively sustain the needs of the community. A new facility will provide an enhanced space to continue to serve the growing and changing needs of the neighbourhood.

The future Place Maillardville Community Centre is proposed to be approximately 2,000 square metres (22,000 square feet) in size, which would enhance the amenities and services offered within a scale, budget and size appropriate for the neighbourhood.

Proposed program spaces and amenities include:

  • a single-court gymnasium,
  • multi-purpose spaces providing flexible space, with server kitchen
  • a lounge for seniors/youth
  • flex space,
  • teaching kitchen,
  • meeting rooms,
  • child minding space,
  • administrative offices,
  • underground parking, and
  • outdoor space including a plaza and park space.

Next Steps

One of the goals of the project is to replace the facility on the site using the currently vacant portion of the property as well as adjacent City-owned land. This will enable programs and services to continue in the old building.

The Council approval for proceeding with the project is expected in Spring 2020, as well as issuance of a building permit.

Subject to approvals, construction is expected to start in Summer 2020 with the new facility planned to be open in Summer 2022, followed by demolition of the current facility and completion of landscaping and the outdoor spaces.

Next Steps

One of the goals of the project is to replace the facility on the site using the currently vacant portion of the property as well as adjacent City-owned land. This will enable programs and services to continue in the old building during construction of the new facility.

As such, the project requires applications to amend the Citywide Official Community Plan, along with rezoning, subdivision and a development variance permit to accommodate its siting.

Subject to approvals, construction is expected to start in early 2020 with the new facility planned to be open by the end of 2021.
