Oakdale Land Use Designation Update

Coquitlam has developed three proposed land use options for the Oakdale neighbourhood, and residents shared their feedback through an online survey and an information session on Sept. 21. The concepts also offer options for housing, transportation, parkland, environmental and growth funding considerations.

Potential Land Use Concepts for Oakdale Neighbourhood

City staff shared with Council findings from the first phase of the Oakdale Land Use Designation Update public consultation and presented three potential land use concepts representing varying growth options for sub-areas within the Oakdale neighbourhood. All three options envision that Oakdale will remain a predominantly residential neighbourhood.

Have Your Say on What Oakdale Will Look Like in 25 Years
Council has now directed staff to get public feedback on the proposed options to help guide future decisions related to the land use plans for this area. Starting in September 2019 the City will be reaching out to Oakdale neighbourhood residents, as well as the broader community and stakeholders, through an online survey, community information session and direct stakeholder engagement.

About the Oakdale Land Use Designation Update

During the development of the Burquitlam-Lougheed Neighbourhood Plan (BLNP), a series of land-use options were presented for different portions of the Burquitlam-Lougheed Plan area.  Feedback on these options was then used to develop the draft BLNP.

Consensus was reached in most areas, with residents consistently supporting proposed land-use changes. In Oakdale (Sub Area A), however, there was little evidence of consensus among stakeholders. As a result Oakdale was designated a Future Planning Area in the BLNP with direction to review and determine appropriate land uses for the neighbourhood through a separate, future planning process.

Subsequent to the adoption of the BLNP, Coquitlam has received numerous petitions, letters and phone interactions with residents seeking the commencement of the Oakdale-specific planning process.  In addition, as an implementation action of the BLNP, the Oakdale update is included in the City of Coquitlam’s 2018 Business Plan.

The proposed Oakdale Land Use Designation Update will help guide development in the Oakdale neighbourhood for the next 25 years.  The project will involve extensive public consultation to ensure any proposed changes fit the vision of both neighbourhood residents and stakeholders.

How to get Involved

An essential part of creating a successful plan is dialogue with residents, landowners, developers, the business community, and community stakeholders.

The Oakdale Land Use Designation Update will include consultation through surveys, social media, community information sessions, public outreach, and distribution of electronic and print media.

We will be updating this webpage regularly with news on when and how to engage with us on the Plan update. See below on how to sign up for the email listserv and how to connect with the Planning and Development department at the City of Coquitlam.
