The Library Services and Spaces Strategy, developed in collaboration with Coquitlam Public Library, provides a long-term roadmap for future libraries that support Coquitlam’s growing and diverse community.

COQUITLAM, B.C., December 10, 2024 – The Library Services and Spaces Strategy, developed in collaboration with Coquitlam Public Library, provides a long-term roadmap for future libraries that support Coquitlam’s growing and diverse community.

Strategy Supports Libraries as Vital Community Resource

Coquitlam Public Library is a well-loved hub for learning, culture and fostering community connections. As the city grows and community needs evolve, thoughtful planning for future library development will ensure the Library continues to be a welcoming space that supports meaningful connections among residents well into the future.

Long-term financial planning and phased capital investments are vital to building a library system that supports the needs of a growing community. Informed by community feedback gathered through Coquitlam Public Library’s strategic planning process and best practices in library design, the strategy sets out a vision for an accessible, flexible and efficient library system balanced with the City’s long-term planning goals.

Key Highlights

The Library Services and Spaces Strategy maps out library development in Coquitlam for the next 30 years. Some highlights include:

  • A Hub-and-Spoke Model: Recommended service model to include one main “Hub” library and strategically located satellite sites, or “Spoke” libraries. This system balances library access for residents across the community and maximizes efficiency.
  • Focus on Flexibility and Inclusivity: In support of adaptable spaces that support a range of activities, from cultural programs to digital learning, Coquitlam’s libraries will prioritize accessibility, sustainable design and inclusivity to ensure that library spaces serve the diverse needs of the community.
  • Growth and Expansion: As Coquitlam’s population continues to grow, there will be phased expansions to the library system, including a new neighbourhood branch co-located in the Northeast Community Centre, a possible future branch in Burquitlam, and reimagined versions of the Poirier and City Centre branches.

Building a Stronger Library for Our Community

The Library Services and Spaces Strategy sets the stage for improving library services to meet the needs of Coquitlam’s growing and diverse community. Endorsed by City Council and the Coquitlam Public Library Board, the strategy ensures that future library projects will be included in the City’s broader facilities and funding plans.

By integrating library planning into the City’s long-term approach to major community amenities, Coquitlam can ensure library spaces remain accessible, inclusive and ready to serve residents as the city grows. Careful financial planning will guide these investments, balancing community benefits with affordability for taxpayers.

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (HUN-kuh-MEE-num) word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-KWET-lum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the q̓ic̓əy̓ (kat-zee), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
