National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
Monday, December 6, 2021
Today the special lighting features at Coquitlam City Hall and along Pinetree Way will be illuminated purple in honour of National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. On this important day, we honour and remember those who have experienced – and lost their lives to – gender-based violence.
December 6 was designated by Parliament as The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women after 14 young women were murdered at Polytechnique Montréal on Dec. 6, 1989. While more than three decades have passed, there is still change that is required. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an influx of gender-based violence reported to police services, shelters and local organizations.
If you or someone you know is experiencing gender-based violence, contact Victim Link BC toll-free at 800-563-0808 for resources. For emergencies, contact 9-1-1.
