COQUITLAM, B.C., September 20, 2023 – We each have a role to play in nurturing a sense of belonging and ensuring the safety of everyone in Coquitlam, whether they live here or are just visiting.

The City is aware of the upcoming 'Million March 4 Children' event planned in our community, as well as similar events taking place across the country, this week. While we uphold the fundamental right of individuals to organize and participate in peaceful protests within our public spaces, we also want to take this moment to reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with the LGBTQ2S+ community. We firmly support their right to live authentically, without fear of harassment or hatred.

The City of Coquitlam remains steadfast in our commitment to championing equity, diversity, and inclusion, which are the cornerstones of a welcoming community. We respect the right to peaceful protest, but it is important to emphasize that there is absolutely no place for hate in Coquitlam.

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (HUN-kuh-MEE-num) word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-KWET-lum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the q̓ic̓əy̓ (kat-zee), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
