Upgrades Will Bring New Features to Glen Park

Coquitlam is advancing work on the next phase of improvements at Glen Park with washrooms, a water play area, expanded picnic areas, an upgraded dog park and trail improvements among the planned updates.

COQUITLAM, B.C., February 9, 2026 – Coquitlam is advancing work on the next phase of improvements at Glen Park with washrooms, a water play area, expanded picnic areas, an upgraded dog park and trail improvements among the planned updates.

The Glen Park Master Plan, approved by Council in 2011, established a long-term vision for the park. Since then, the City Centre neighbourhood has experienced significant population growth, creating an opportunity for the park to better respond to the needs of current and future residents through an expanded and more diverse range of amenities.

Work on this phase of the project began in 2023, including public engagement in fall 2023. In 2024, the project was temporarily placed on hold while Coquitlam developed a new funding framework to support infrastructure projects, a result of the impacts from new provincial housing legislation. With a new funding strategy in place, the project is moving forward and advancing the next phase of improvements for the community.

A Phased Approach to Upgrades

The proposed improvements will be implemented in two phases. Phase one will be finalized and constructed through 2026. Phase two will be finalized in 2026 with construction planned for 2027 to 2028.

Phase one includes:

  • Nature Play Area: A forest-inspired space with natural elements such as logs, boulders and tree stumps for creative play and outdoor learning. A shared site with School District 43 (SD43), the space will be open to both the public and students of Glen Elementary, with priority for students during school hours.
  • New Dog Off-Leash Area: Relocated to the west side of the park among mature trees, a new off-leash dog area will include separate fenced spaces for both small and large dogs, seating, agility features and shade considerations. Moving the off-leash dog  area allows it to maintain its current size while adding in some improvements, and also helps reduce conflicts with neighbouring school children. Lighting and drinking water will be included in phase two, and the existing off-leash dog area will remain open until the new space is ready for play.
  • Trail Improvements: Realigned and widened trails in the north end of the park will improve access to the new amenities.

Phase two upgrades will include:

  • Accessible Washrooms: A centrally located washroom near the playground area.
  • Water Play Zone: A fun, interactive spray deck near the playground and great lawn area, providing all-ages play and cooling on hot summer days.
  • Social Hub and Picnic Enhancements: New standalone covered picnic shelters near the washroom and water play zone, with additional picnic areas and social gathering spaces placed throughout the park. The existing plaza and picnic area will also be retained and the plaza expanded.
  • Dog Park Servicing: Lighting and drinking water will be added to the off-leash dog area to extend usability and support year-round use.
  • Trail Updates: Accessibility updates throughout the park, including paved primary asphalt pathways to all major amenities.

Design Concept Reflects Community Vision

From September to October 2023, the City hosted a variety of engagement opportunities to gather input from the community on the planned amenities. Engagement included pop-up sessions, a virtual open house, an online survey and conversations with the City’s cultural partners and advisory committees.

The feedback collected revealed a strong support for accessible, fun spaces, with a desire to maintain the natural, forested character of the park. Staff compared the 2023 public engagement results to the 2011 Master Plan and used the information to update the park concept to better reflect current park uses and needs.

With Town Centre Park less than one kilometer away, the new concept focuses on providing a variety of complementary amenities in a tranquil setting to support the diverse needs of the growing community.
