COQUITLAM, B.C., April 8, 2026 – Getting ready for spring cleaning? Dispose of yard trimmings free of charge with the City’s extra curbside yard waste pickup on your regular collection days, from April 13 to May 22.

Just in Time for Spring Cleaning

The City’s Seasonal Unlimited Yard Trimmings program happens twice a year – in spring and fall – giving residents who receive City waste collection an easy way to manage seasonal green waste like grass clippings, weeds, leaves, and pruned branches.

The program collects an average of 436 tonnes of yard waste each year, helping Coquitlam residents keep their yards tidy while promoting sustainable waste management.

Preparing Your Extra Yard Waste for Pickup

Yard trimmings can be placed in Green Carts, old garbage cans labeled with a Yard Trimmings sticker, in paper bags or tied up into bundles. Pick up free Yard Trimmings stickers from the Engineering counter at Coquitlam City Hall or the City Centre and Poirier Public libraries.

Collection Tips

  • Set out yard waste by 7:30 a.m. on collection days.
  • Collection may occur as late as 7:30 p.m. As a separate truck collects extra yard trimmings, material may be collected at a different time than Green Carts.
  • Place materials curbside without blocking sidewalks, lanes or streets.

Important Guidelines

  • No plastic bags, even if they are labelled “biodegradable” or “compostable”.
  • Bundles, cans, and paper bags of yard trimmings can be placed at the curb prior to collection day, but City-issued carts should not be set out until after 5:30 a.m. the morning of collection. Setting carts out too early may attract wildlife and could result in a fine.
  • Tied bundles of branches or trimmings must be less than 1 meter (3 feet) in length and individual branches must be less than 7.5 centimeter (3 inches) in diameter.
  • Each bag, can or bundle of extra yard trimmings must weigh less than 20 kilograms (44 pounds).
  • Sod, rocks, soil and plastic bags will not accepted.
  • Do not put food scraps into paper bags or Yard Trimmings cans. They must go in your City-issued Green Cart.

If rain is in the forecast, consider covering your paper bags with a tarp and delay setting bags out until the morning of collection to keep them as dry as possible.

More details on the program are posted at coquitlam.ca/YardTrimmings.
