COQUITLAM , B.C., September 25, 2026 – Coquitlam celebrated the official grand opening of the new Burke Mountain Athletic Park today, marking a significant investment in outdoor recreation and community infrastructure in one of the City’s fastest-growing neighbourhoods.

Located alongside the future Burke Mountain Middle/Secondary School, the multi-use athletic park was developed in partnership with School District 43 to provide year-round recreation opportunities for students, local sports organizations and residents. 

Building for Current Needs and Future Growth

The Burke Mountain Athletic Park, home to the Wesbild Track and Field, includes a 400-metre running track with lighting, a full-size artificial turf field and four full-sized lit tennis courts. Supporting amenities include public washrooms with on-site parking to become available following completion of the school site.

The facility has been designed to respond to the growing demand for high-quality outdoor recreation opportunities in Northeast Coquitlam, while creating a shared community space that can serve both school and public needs.

From track and field activities to team sports, tennis, fitness and casual recreation, the new park provides opportunities for people to stay active, connect with others, and enjoy the outdoors.

A Shared Vision for Burke Mountain

The Burke Mountain Athletic Park is part of a larger vision for Northeast Coquitlam, where new community infrastructure is being developed alongside residential growth.

The City worked closely with School District 43 to create a joint school and park site that makes efficient use of land while expanding opportunities for both students and the broader community.

The project’s design was informed by input from City Council, the Sports and Recreation Advisory Committee and community sport stakeholders, including the Coquitlam Field Sports Association. The facility also builds on the direction established through the City’s Sports Field Strategy, while aligning with broader initiatives such as the Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan, and the Tennis and Pickleball Strategy.

Funding Support

The new outdoor sport facility has been funded in part through grants and development-related funding. Under the Growing Communities Fund, the Province of British Columbia invested $4 million. Support also comes from Wesbild with a $5 million contribution for the track and field. Additional fees collected through development have also helped fund the project. 

This funding support has helped enable the delivery of new amenities for Coquitlam while preserving the City’s capacity to address other priority infrastructure and amenities throughout the community.
