COQUITLAM, B.C., May 21, 2026 – Mark your calendars and join Coquitlam Fire/Rescue to learn practical ways to reduce wildfire risks around your property and help prevent human-caused fires.

• Date: Saturday, June 6
• Time: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Location: Hampton Park Elementary School, 1760 Paddock Drive

Coquitlam Fire/Rescue will display wildfire-related equipment and educate homeowners about the importance of removing dead trees, shrubs and other flammable vegetation. Emergency Management staff will cover how to prepare to evacuate in the event of a wildfire, and and how to be prepared for other emergency events. Tips to Reduce Fire Risks

Many homes in Coquitlam are located where wilderness and development meet, which means that fires can easily spread between vegetation and structures. Coquitlam Fire/Rescue tips will help homeowners who live near these green spaces prevent a wildfire from starting on, or spreading to, their property. Tips include:

• Reduce the amount of fuel present around your homes; prune your shrubs, remove dead and dry vegetation, as well as tree limbs 2-3 metres from the ground.
• Keep your roof and gutters clear of dead needles; prune branches that hang over the roof.
• Break up continuous vegetation, and space out plantings so there is no direct line of vegetation leading to your home, garage or any outbuilding or structure.
• Relocate wood debris to a location that is at least 10 metres away from your home.
• Be aware when mowing your lawn that if the blade comes into contact with a rock, it can cause a spark that may ignite a fire.
• Do not litter cigarette butts or do any outdoor burning. 
• Ensure your vehicle's exhaust does not blow onto a dry lawn.

Adopted in late 2021, the Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan outlines actions aimed at reducing wildfire risk and improving the City’s response and recovery if fires do occur. Property tax notices are being mailed out to Coquitlam property owners next week. If you’ve signed up for e-bills through MyCoquitlam, expect to receive your bill this week. Payment is due July 2, 2026.

Where Your Tax Dollars Go

Property taxes are the primary way municipalities fund core services, including police protection, fire/rescue services, road maintenance, parks and trails, recreation and cultural services, programs and events, and more. 

But not all of your property tax payment stays with the City. Approximately 41 cents of every property tax dollar is collected by the City on behalf of other government agencies, including the Province of B.C., TransLink, Metro Vancouver and B.C. Assessment.

Coquitlam’s 2026 budget takes a balanced, responsible approach that recognizes today’s affordability challenges, while ensuring the City continues to deliver on the services and amenities our community relies on. Through sound financial planning and careful cost-containment measures, the City limited the tax increase to reduce the impact on residents. For the average homeowner, that means an increase of about $93 in property taxes a year — less than $8 a month — to support today’s services while planning for the future.

Ways to Pay Your Property Taxes

• At your bank in person or online using the 8-digit folio/roll number from your tax notice.
• By credit card online using both the 8-digit folio/roll number and the access code from your tax notice.
• By cheque via the secure drop boxes at City Hall (3000 Guildford Way) and Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex (633 Poirier St.). Cheques can be post-dated up to the due date (do not deposit cash).
• In person at City Hall by cash, cheque or debit card.

Cheque payment by mail is also accepted; however, do not mail your cheque payment if a postal service disruption is pending. Property taxes must be paid by the due date to avoid penalty.

Provincial Programs to Help with Paying Taxes

The Home Owner Grant reduces the amount of property taxes you pay each year on your principle residence. Eligible owners must claim the grant directly through the Province before the property tax due date to avoid penalty. You do not need your property tax notice to apply. Visit gov.bc.ca/HomeOwnerGrant or call 1-888-355-2700 to apply.

Residents may qualify for the Provincial Property Tax Deferment Program, for their principal residence, if they meet the Provincial criteria. The Province has recently changed the program, therefore please visit gov.bc.ca/PropertyTaxDeferment for more information.

Pre-Pay Your 2027 Property Taxes

Coquitlam property owners can pre-pay their 2027 property taxes by setting up monthly instalments through the City’s prepayment program. Visit coquitlam.ca/TaxPrePay to learn more. Applications are due to Revenue Services by July 15 to start withdrawals on August 1.

Due to annual scheduled maintenance, Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex will be temporarily closed, starting Tuesday, June 2 and will reopen on June 29.

COQUITLAM, B.C., May 20, 2026 – Due to annual scheduled maintenance, Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex will be temporarily closed, starting Tuesday, June 2 and will reopen on June 29. 

The fitness centre will be closed from June 2 to June 8, and will reopen on Tuesday, June 9. The reception desk and café will be open with reduced operating hours. 

Maintaining the Facility for Daily Public Use 

Because the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex's swimming pool is open almost year-round and open to the public daily, some maintenance and cleaning cannot be done while the facility is open. 

The annual maintenance prolongs the life of this significant city asset, lowers the risk of equipment breakdowns and guarantees a safe environment for employees and the general public.

Alternative Options Available 

You can still get your laps in at other facilities across the city with indoor swim options at City Centre Aquatic Complex (1210 Pinetree Way) or make a splash starting May 30 at our outdoor pools, Mundy Park Pool (655 Hillcrest Street) or Eagle Ridge Pool (2689 Guildford Way). 

Drop-in fitness classes and weightroom access are available as an alternative at many City facilities. Find schedules, locations and facility information at coquitlam.ca/fitness.

The City's contractor will be completing safety improvements at the intersection of Clarke Road and Como Lake Avenue, starting the week of May 11. Work will take place Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Traffic flow will be impacted.

What: Intersection Safety Improvements

Where: Intersection of Clarke Road and Como Lake Avenue (Location Map)

When: Work is scheduled to begin the week of May 11 and will take approximately one month to complete (weather dependent). Work will take place Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Impacts: Traffic flow will be impacted during active construction and some traffic delays are to be expected. Signage and traffic control personnel will be in place to direct pedestrians during construction hours, and pedestrian access will be restored daily outside of those hours. Please plan an alternate route to avoid delays or plan extra time when using this route.
