Coquitlam residents and commuters will notice new traffic signals and road safety upgrades at the Guildford Way and Pinetree Way intersection on Tuesday, May 13.
COQUITLAM, B.C., May 7, 2025 – Coquitlam residents and commuters will notice new traffic signals and road safety upgrades at the Guildford Way and Pinetree Way intersection on Tuesday, May 13, following the completion of Phase 2 of the Guildford Way Transportation Road Improvements project.
People driving, walking, cycling and taking transit along Guildford Way and at its intersection with Pinetree Way are encouraged to learn about the changes and get to know the new street design.
Road Safety Improvements Overview
Phase 1 and 2 of the project transformed the corridor with upgrades designed to enhance safety, accessibility and comfort. These improvements include raised micromobility lanes for people riding bikes and scooters, and wider sidewalks with better lighting and accessibility features to ensure inclusivity. People taking transit will benefit from enhanced bus stop waiting areas, while the preservation of mature trees maintains the corridor’s original character.
Phase 2 changes and improvements include:
Guildford Way Intersection and Pinetree Way:
- The previous southbound right-turn slip lane and island from Pinetree Way onto Guildford Way will be replaced with a dedicated right-turn lane reducing speeds and increasing the area for people walking and rolling at the corner.
- Right turns on red will be prohibited in all directions, reducing the risk of serious collisions between turning vehicles and those who are walking or rolling.
- Protected left-turns will be in place in all directions, allowing left turns only during a green left-turn arrow, improving safety for all road users.
- Separated micromobility lanes provide dedicated space for people riding bikes and scooters, separate from the sidewalks for improved safety.
- A leading pedestrian and micromobility interval to intersection lights will be added, giving people walking or rolling a head start to cross the intersection before vehicles are permitted to enter it.
- Road repaving for a smoother and safer surface.
Guildford Way between Johnson Street and Pinetree Way:
- Raised, one-way separated micromobility lanes for bikes and scooters on both sides of Guildford Way, keeping riders moving in the same direction as traffic.
- Wider sidewalks and new curb ramps for improved accessibility.
- Upgraded bus stop waiting areas designed to meet TransLink’s new accessibility guidelines, providing improved access and comfort for people taking transit.
- New bicycle signals at the intersections of Pinetree Way, Guildford Way, and Pacific Street, guiding cyclists safely through intersections.

Supporting Safe, Active Transportation and Accessibility
The City Centre Area Plan recognizes Guildford Way as a key ‘citywide greenway’ in the City’s Active Transportation Network, connecting residents and commuters across the Tri-Cities. With proximity to major destinations, parks, schools and City facilities, Guildford Way sees high traffic from people driving, walking, cycling and taking transit.
The improvements to road safety and active transportation make walking, biking and rolling more enjoyable while addressing overall road safety concerns.
These improvements will:
- Enhance accessibility for people using wheelchairs, walkers, and mobility aids
- Support the City’s draft Transportation Plan 2050 goals:
- Encouraging sustainable modes of transportation, with the goal of 50% of all trips made by walking, micromobility and transit
- Achieve Vision Zero, reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries to zero
- Reach zero transportation-related GHG emissions
Funding
Phase 1 of the Guildford Greenway project, completed in 2023, extended from the Port Moody border to Johnson Street, introducing on-street micromobility lanes with curbs to separate micromobility users from vehicle traffic.
External funding for Phases 1 and 2 was provided through:

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (HUN-kuh-MEE-num) word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-KWET-lum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the q̓ic̓əy̓ (kat-zee), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
