[ARCHIVED] Extra Yard Trimmings Collection Available in Coquitlam for Spring

Wheelbarrow with sticks Coquitlam residents doing their spring yard work can set out additional yard waste for free curbside pickup.

COQUITLAM, B.C., April 11, 2024 – Coquitlam residents doing their spring yard work can set out additional yard waste for free curbside pickup on their regular collection day from April 15 to May 24.

Coquitlam provides this additional six-week service twice a year to residents who receive City curbside services. Collecting an average of 437 tonnes each year, this program helps residents manage their extra green waste generated doing seasonal yard work such as grass clippings, leaves and pruned branches.

Preparing Extra Yard Waste for Pickup

Residents’ yard trimmings can be placed in Green Carts, old garbage cans labeled with a Yard Trimmings sticker, in kraft paper bags or bundled.

Yard Trimmings stickers are available for free pickup from the Engineering counter at Coquitlam City Hall, at the Town Centre Recycling Depot or the City Centre and Poirier Public libraries.

Extra yard waste needs to be placed out by 7:30 a.m. on collection days. A separate truck collects extra yard trimmings so material may be collected at a different time than Green Carts. The extra yard trimmings’ collection can take place up until 7:30 p.m.

  • Bundles, cans, and kraft paper bags of yard trimmings can be placed at the curb prior to collection day, but City-issued carts are not to be set out until before 5:30 a.m. the morning of collection at risk of a fine, even if the Green Cart contains only yard trimmings.
  • Tied bundles of branches or trimmings must be less than 1 meter (3 feet) in length and individual branches must be less than 7.5 centimeter (3 inches) in diameter.
  • Each bag, can or bundle of extra yard trimmings must weigh less than 20 kilograms (44 pounds).
  • Sod, rocks, soil and plastic bags are not accepted.
  • Only place food scraps in the City-issued Green Cart, do not place food in kraft bags or Yard Trimmings cans.
  • Yard trimmings can not block vehicle travel lanes. Please place materials curbside in front of your home and avoid blocking sidewalks, laneways or streets.
  • If rain is in the forecast, please consider covering kraft paper bags with a tarp and delay setting bags out until the morning of collection.

Details on the program are posted at coquitlam.ca/YardTrimmings.

United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre

There is a year-round free yard waste drop off option available for Coquitlam residents at the United Boulevard Recycling & Waste Centre at 995 United Blvd. Accepted materials include grass clippings, leaves, plants and plant cuttings, tree and hedge prunings, tree branches and food waste. Please note, proof of residency is required.

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (HUN-kuh-MEE-num) word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-KWET-lum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the q̓ic̓əy̓ (kat-zee), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
