A new community centre, improvements to parks, and facility upgrades to ensure the long life of City assets were among the highlights of Coquitlam’s Capital Projects annual report shared with City Council this week.
COQUITLAM, B.C., May 16, 2024 – A new community centre, improvements to parks, and facility upgrades to ensure the long life of City assets were among the highlights of Coquitlam’s Capital Projects annual report shared with City Council this week.
Representing an approximate $70 million investment in the community, the list of projects includes improvements to recreation, civic facilities and other public amenities intended to meet the demands of a growing community.
The report also noted that the City is working diligently to secure substantial grant funding to offset the property tax impacts of capital projects, showing a proactive approach to financial stewardship. The grants include $4.4 million for Spani Pool through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, $750,000 for enhancements to the Town Centre Park Lake Loop through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund and $82,500 through the Rick Hansen Foundation to improve accessibility at Dogwood Pavilion and the new Town Centre Park Community Centre.
In the time since the last presentation in May 2023, the projects completed include:
- Town Centre Park Community Centre: Visitors are able to hang out, grab a coffee, study, or join an activity or program to learn something new. The centre offers programming focused on arts, culture and nature, as well as summer camps and general recreation activities.
- Percy Perry Track Replacement and Artificial Field: Upgrades to Coquitlam’s premier outdoor sports facilities and amenity included a full replacement of the rubber track and artificial turf field.
- Mariner Park: Tennis court replacement and upgrades to align with goals laid out in the Tennis and Pickleball Services and Facilities Strategy.
- Crane Park: Building on the City’s commitment to revitalize older parks in Coquitlam, upgrades included a new playground, open-lawn activity area and an accessible pathway.
In addition, progress continues on the following projects:
- Maillardville Community Centre Plaza: An important public gathering space, this plaza features tiered seating and play areas. Construction is nearing completion and an official opening is slated for late June or early July.
- Austin Works Yard Renewal: This extensive project supports community safety by better enabling key operational departments to provide critical services to the City and its residents. This includes expanded fleet maintenance facilities that support emergency response vehicles and snow response vehicles during winter events.
- Pool Renewal and Expansion at Mundy Park: This project will upgrade and enlarge the existing aquatic facility to enhance accessibility, inclusivity, and programming for all ages and abilities, incorporating a new leisure and warming pool alongside the renovated lap pool in Mundy Park's forest setting. Completion is anticipated by summer 2024.
- Burke Mountain Joint School/Park Site: In partnership with School District 43, this project will include a 400-metre running track with lighting, an artificial turf field, a natural grass field and four full-size tennis courts adjacent to a new secondary school to create a destination outdoor sport facility on Burke Mountain. Completion is anticipated by summer 2026.
