COQUITLAM, B.C., May 29, 2024 – Shift gears from weekend rides to weekday commutes and celebrate Go by Bike Week with Coquitlam June 3 – 9.
Go by Bike Week Events
Every year, Coquitlam partners with local non-profit HUB Cycling on promotional events and activities with education, celebration stations, and team or personal challenges. The City is hosting two public events to help experienced and novice riders learn about the health and societal benefits of cycling.
Residents are encouraged to sign up online and log their cycling trips to track KMs and greenhouses gas savings. The more trips you log, the more prizes you can win – this year's grand prize is a holiday to Italy.
Celebration stations will offer snacks, hard copies of the Tri-Cities Cycling Map, quick bike maintenance and prize giveaways.

Coquitlam’s Commitment to Sustainable Transportation
The City’s annual participation in Go by Bike Week events are just one example of our ongoing commitment to sustainable transportation.
Phase 2 of the Guildford Greenway Micromobility project is set to begin construction in June from Johnson Street to Pinetree Way, and will:
- Provide raised separated micromobility/bike lanes and wider sidewalks on both sides of Guildford Way.
- Convert existing pedestrian signals at both Pacific Street and Town Centre Boulevard intersections to full traffic signals.
- Improve lighting and bus stops.
- Improve safety at the Guildford Way/Pinetree Way intersection with protected left-turns and shorter pedestrian crossings.
Completed in 2023, Phase 1 of the project extended from the Port Moody border to Johnson Street, with on-street micromobility lanes separated from vehicle travel lanes by curbs.
The City is also proposing improvements to Nelson Street, one of several active transportation projects currently planned for Southwest Coquitlam. Information on the project, including proposed renderings, is available at LetsTalkCoquitlam.ca/NelsonStreet.
Bylaw amendments have been adopted in support of active transportation, including increased numbers of bike parking spaces, bicycle maintenance and end-of-trip facilities in new buildings. These aim to encourage cycling in the community and make it easier for future residents and commercial office users to travel by bike.
Given the rapid growth in demand for these forms of transportation, Coquitlam launched an e-scooter pilot. The City is closely examining the role of micromobility (light transportation modes such bikes and scooters) as part of the update to the City’s Strategic Transportation Plan.
Cycling Support
With the right gear, cycling is possible year-round in Coquitlam, and with the popularity of e-bikes, hills and longer distances are no longer the obstacles that they once were.
About Coquitlam’s Updated Strategic Transportation Plan
The City adopted the current Strategic Transportation Plan in 2012, and since then has made progress in increasing sustainable transportation in Coquitlam, such as walking, cycling and public transit. There have also been significant changes and improvements, including the addition of SkyTrain and consideration for different kinds of street users, as well as emerging technologies to address climate change mitigation and adaptation.
A new Strategic Transportation Plan will provide an updated long-term vision for Coquitlam’s transportation network that integrates these changes and provides a focus on prioritizing key actions and policy changes for the next 10 years. It will also align with other City plans such as the recently adopted Environmental Sustainability Plan and the Economic Development Strategy, while also applying the City’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-kwuh-tlum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the sq̓əc̓iy̓aɁɬ təməxʷ (Katzie), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
