Strategic Priorities Aim to Foster a Resilient and Livable Community
The Strategic Plan reflects the collective vision for Coquitlam’s future, with a focus on sustaining a high-quality life for current and future generations, where people choose to live, learn, work and play.
In 2023, residents had the opportunity to provide their feedback on some of their issues and values. An infographic summarizing that feedback is available at LetsTalkCoquitlam.ca/StrategicPlan.
The nine new strategic priorities identified as a result of this work include:
- Community Safety
- Housing
- Environmental Sustainability
- Critical Infrastructure
- Workplace and People
- Community Amenities
- Financial Excellence and Operational Efficiency
- EDI, Reconciliation and Social Cohesion
- Economic Vitality
Each of these priorities is guided by specific objectives and tasks (how we plan to achieve it) and progress indicators (how we will measure success).
With new residents and businesses coming to Coquitlam each year, the updated Strategic Plan allows the City to adapt to new trends and challenges in the delivery of effective municipal programs and services in order to sustain the high quality of life residents enjoy.
Strategic Plan Maps Out City’s Priorities
Coquitlam’s Strategic Plan is a high-level document that outlines the long-term vision for the City. It provides strategic direction for the organization along with a vision and desired outcomes for the community.
The Plan’s high-level vision is currently “Coquitlam: sustaining a high quality of life for current and future generations, where people choose to live, learn, work and play.”
That vision, along with the Plan’s mission, priorities and objectives filter down into all of the City’s other major plans and strategies including the annual Business Plan and Financial Plan.

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (HUN-kuh-MEE-num) word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-KWET-lum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the q̓ic̓əy̓ (kat-zee), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
