Mundy Park Pool Update

Mundy Park 3 - Newsflash In spring 2023, the City embarked on renovating and expanding the 52-year-old outdoor pool in Mundy Park to meet current accessibility and sustainability standards. The pool was originally scheduled to open this summer, but it will be delayed to 2025.

COQUITLAM, B.C., July 11, 2024 – The City of Coquitlam is committed to providing accessible, sustainable and safe facilities that meet the needs of our community for years to come. To support this goal, the City embarked on renovating and expanding the 52-year-old outdoor pool in Mundy Park in the spring of 2023.

Originally scheduled to open in the summer of 2024, the pool in Mundy Park will not be opening as planned due to unexpected and unavoidable circumstances, largely construction delays.

The City is disappointed the pool will not be opening in time for the summer season and acknowledge the impact this delay has on our community members. In light of this delay, the City is offering a range of fun, free outdoor activities and reduced cost programs throughout the summer.

Options to Stay Cool this Summer

To help Coquitlam residents stay cool this summer, the City is offering a number of free and low-cost activities:

  • Free Admission at Eagle Ridge Outdoor Pool – Drop-in for a swim at Eagle Ridge for free. The pool is open seven days a week and offers lane swimming, two diving boards, large change room facilities and a spacious grass picnic area to spend the day. Operating hours are available at coquitlam.ca/OutdoorPools.
  • Water Play Pop-Ups – Coquitlam’s recreation team will be leading fun pop-up activities like inflatable waterslides, slip’n’slides, relay games, and more at Coquitlam parks throughout the summer. A schedule of activities and locations will be added to coquitlam.ca/StayAndPlay in the coming weeks.
  • $10 Summer Child and Youth Pass – Usually priced at $25, the Summer Child and Youth Pass provides unlimited access to all of Coquitlam’s drop-in activities for children up to 18 years old. The pass fee will be reduced to $10 for 2024; all current pass holders will be automatically credited the $15 difference. More information is available at coquitlam.ca/SummerPass.
  • Extended Access to Local YMCA for Coquitlam Residents – The City of Coquitlam is proud to partner with the YMCA to offer more hours for Coquitlam resident access at the Coquitlam Bettie Allard YMCA. Coquitlam resident access times have been increased with 20 additional hours added until August 3. During the resident access times, Coquitlam residents can use the YMCA without a membership, for the same price as a single admission to the City’s recreation facilities. Learn more and find a link to the schedule at coquitlam.ca/YMCA

New Name Reflects Mundy Park Location

When the pool opens, it will be named the Mundy Park Pool to reflect its location nestled within the heart of Mundy Park, the City's largest urban forest. This change will assist in wayfinding, making it easier for residents to find Coquitlam’s facilities by tying them to their geographical location.

Designed for Current Needs and Future Growth

The original outdoor pool was over 50 years old and in need of replacement to meet current sustainability standards and the future needs of our growing community. Opening for the 2025 outdoor swim season, the new pool has been designed with accessibility, sustainability and usability in mind.

The recent upgrades will allow for increased capacity at the pool; up to 100% more drop-in swimmers and up to 50% more swimming lessons than the old pool was able to accommodate. Learn more about the facility upgrades at coquitlam.ca/MundyParkPoolRenewal.

Infrastructure Funding Support

Funding for the aquatic facility renovation and expansion was supported in part by the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program’s Community, Culture and Recreation Infrastructure stream. Under the program, the Government of Canada invested over $2.42 million, and the Province of British Columbia contributed over $2.01 million.

This funding support has helped to enable the development of an accessible and sustainable facility that will serve the community for years to come.

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (HUN-kuh-MEE-num) word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-KWET-lum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the q̓ic̓əy̓ (kat-zee), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
