Help Shape Coquitlam’s 2025 Budget Planning

Coquitlam's 2025 budget planning process is underway and community members are invited to share their views through an online survey.

COQUITLAM, B.C., September 3, 2024 – Coquitlam’s 2025 budget planning process is underway and community members are invited to share their views through an online survey.

As we develop the 2025 budget, City Council and staff are focused on mitigating the impacts of current economic conditions on our bottom line, including inflationary pressures, rising construction costs and added responsibilities downloaded from other levels of government. 

We recognize the impact of rising costs on residents and local businesses, and are committed to maintaining service levels and City assets to ensure we can continue to provide a high quality of life in Coquitlam now and into the future. 

From now until September 15, we encourage residents and businesses to visit LetsTalkCoquitlam.ca/budget2025 to complete a short survey. This is your chance to share your views on whether the City is allocating the right amount of resources to areas that matter most to you. 

Your feedback will help Council to make informed decisions during budget deliberations later this year. 

Why Your Input Matters

Public participation in the annual budget planning process helps to ensure the City’s budget reflects the community’s priorities, while also considering current economic challenges. By participating, you can also learn more about how city budgets are created, and how your property tax dollars and other revenues are spent. 

Your feedback helps the City balance individual needs with those of a growing community, ensuring we deliver on key priorities and projects.

The Complex Process of Municipal Budgeting

Planning Coquitlam’s annual budget is a complex, months-long process shaped by long-range financial policies, best practices, and input from Council, staff, the City’s partners (Coquitlam Public Library, Evergreen Cultural Centre, Place des Arts and Coquitlam Heritage Society) and the public.

This thorough approach ensures the City can continue to provide essential infrastructure and services that support residents’ day-to-day lives, such as water, garbage collection, roads, parks and green spaces, public safety and more. 

With a strong foundation in financial resiliency Coquitlam remains committed to a balanced approach supported by Council-approved policies. This approach guides how we support for community growth and ensures we invest in the infrastructure, amenities, programs and services needed to meet the needs of both current and future residents.

Explore Coquitlam’s Budget Data 

Through the Community Satisfaction Survey, Coquitlam residents have expressed a strong interest in learning more about City spending and projects. To meet this demand, the City offers Coquitlam OpenBook, a data visualization tool that allows residents to explore City data through informational text and clickable maps, charts and graphs. 

Anyone can access the following categories:

  • 2024 – 2028 approved capital budgets, detailed by budget groups;
  • 2024 capital project explorer, including maps, budgets and background details on over 20 major projects;
  • 2024 operating budget, broken down by department; and
  • 2023 Annual Report, overview of expenses and revenues.

This tool enables users to search, filter, and delve into topics that interest them. Feedback can also be provided through a form linked to the site’s menu bar.
