COQUITLAM, B.C., September 16, 2024 – Coquitlam is hosting two public information sessions in October for residents to ask questions and learn about the City’s work to implement provincial housing legislation changes, aimed at increasing housing options across the province.
Coquitlam has long been a leader in initiatives to support housing supply and affordability. The City’s approach to implementing the provincial housing changes continues to focus on balancing community growth with sound governance and responsible financial planning.

Why Does This Matter to Coquitlam Residents?
In order to comply with recent provincial legislative changes, Coquitlam is required to implement significant changes that will affect resident experiences and how the City manages growth and development in our community. This includes limiting public hearings and eliminating parking requirements for new housing projects.
Provincial changes to development financing rules also affect how the City plans for and funds community amenities like parks, recreation centres and affordable housing initiatives, which may affect the timing of these important projects or affect future property tax rates.
Stay Informed
The City’s work to implement the provincial housing legislation is ongoing, with many changes still to come. Coquitlam is committed to keeping residents informed with a focus on the issues important to our community.
Earlier this year, the City hosted an “Ask Us Anything” event on social media to receive community questions on the provincial housing legislation changes. We have gathered the questions and answers from that event, along with others received by phone, email and in person. A list of the frequently asked questions is available at LetsTalkCoquitlam.ca/ProvincialHousingChanges.
The City has also established a number of different ways for our community to access information and receive updates:

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (HUN-kuh-MEE-num) word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-KWET-lum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the q̓ic̓əy̓ (kat-zee), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
