Tackle Fall Cleanup with Coquitlam’s Extra Yard Trimmings Collection

COQUITLAM, B.C., October 15, 2024 - As the leaves begin to fall, Coquitlam residents that receive collection from the City can take advantage of free curbside pickup for additional yard waste from October 21 to November 28. This seasonal service allows you to dispose of extra yard trimmings conveniently on your regular collection day.

Offered twice a year, Coquitlam’s six-week yard trimmings collection program helps residents tackle the extra green waste generated from seasonal cleanups, such as fallen leaves, grass clippings, and pruned branches. On average, the City collects over 450 tonnes of yard waste annually through this initiative, helping to keep yards tidy and streets clean.

How to Prepare Your Yard Waste for Pickup

To participate in this program, simply place extra yard trimmings in old garbage cans labeled with a Yard Trimmings sticker, in kraft paper bags, or in bundles tied with twine and place at the curb on your regular collection day. Yard Trimmings stickers are available for free at Coquitlam City Hall’s Engineering counter, Town Centre Recycling Depot, or at the City Centre and Poirier Public Libraries.

Here’s what you need to know to ensure smooth collection:

  • Have your extra yard trimmings set out by 7:30 a.m. on your collection day. Note that a separate truck will collect the extra yard waste, so it may be picked up at a different time than your Green Cart.
  • While bundles, cans, and kraft bags of yard trimmings can be placed out early, City-issued Green Carts must only be set out after 5:30 a.m. on collection day to avoid fines, even if they contain only yard trimmings.
  • Keep branches in tied bundles no longer than 1 meter (3 feet) in length and less than 7.5 centimeters (3 inches) in diameter.
  • Each bag, can, or bundle should weigh less than 20 kilograms (44 pounds).
  • Items like sod, rocks, soil, and plastic bags are not accepted.
  • Food scraps should only be put in your regular Green Cart – keep them out of kraft bags or other containers used for extra yard trimmings.
  • Ensure your materials are placed curbside without blocking sidewalks or streets. If rain is expected, cover kraft bags with a tarp to protect them from getting soggy and delay placing them out until the morning of collection.

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (HUN-kuh-MEE-num) word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-KWET-lum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the q̓ic̓əy̓ (kat-zee), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
