[ARCHIVED] Lend a Hand and Be a Good Neighbour this Winter

Snow Angels - 2020 Coquitlam residents are encouraged to consider their neighbours this winter by lending a helping hand and volunteering to be a Snow Angel.

COQUITLAM, B.C., Nov. 25, 2020 – Coquitlam residents are encouraged to consider their neighbours this winter by lending a helping hand and volunteering to be a Snow Angel.

During a year that has been challenging for many, the winter season increases challenges for the elderly and those with mobility concerns who are vulnerable to the effects of snow.

 Good Neighbours Make Great Neighbourhoods

Being a good neighbour takes on a new meaning and a sense of urgency during the winter months. There are many actions you can take to help your neighbours stay safe.

  • Plan to help; don’t wait for them to ask: Consider your neighbours who may need a helping hand with snow shoveling and other tasks, like picking up mail, setting out garbage or shopping for groceries.
  • Keep your neighbourhood safe for everyone: Slippery sidewalks are hazardous for everyone – particularly for seniors, those with mobility concerns and parents with strollers. If you notice a covered sidewalk near your property while you are clearing your own, consider clearing the walkway.
  • Get to know your neighbours, safely: With COVID-19 and recent Provincial Health Officer orders for the Lower Mainland in mind, communicate with neighbours outside from a safe distance, digitally or over the phone.

Volunteer to be a Snow Angel

When the snow starts to fall, Coquitlam’s Snow Angels slide in to action. The City is ramping up its annual recruitment of volunteers ready to shovel snow for those in the community who are unable to clear the sidewalks next to their home, as required in the City’s Boulevard Maintenance Bylaw. Coquitlam residents 16 years of age and over and capable of shoveling snow can apply.

Snow Angels are only required to clear City sidewalks – not private walkways and driveways – from one to two assigned homes. Shoveling must be completed within 10 hours after the end of every snowfall.

Volunteers are needed throughout Coquitlam – apply now: www.coquitlam.ca/snowangels.

Get Connected with a Snow Angel

Snow Angels support is available for Coquitlam residents aged 65 or older, or for those with a disability who are unable to clear the snow from their adjacent City sidewalk.

Information about the Snow Angels program requirements for volunteers and recipients is available at www.coquitlam.ca/snowangels. Get in touch with Community Services staff at communityservices@coquitlam.ca or call 604-927-6922.
