[ARCHIVED] New Portal Shares Coquitlam Data Through Maps and Apps

Man sitting on a couch and scrolling on a tablet. A wide variety of City of Coquitlam data is now a click away, with the launch of a new open data portal on July 14.

COQUITLAM, BC, July 14, 2021 - A wide variety of City of Coquitlam data is now a click away, with the launch of a new open data portal on July 14.

The portal – based on GIS (geographic information systems) technology – provides 24/7 access to interactive maps and apps that provide data commonly requested by residents, businesses, builders, students, the media and others. Until now, much of that information needed to be obtained through City staff.

Explore the City Online

The new portal makes finding City data easier than ever through maps, tables, charts and images. Search the gallery at www.coquitlam.ca/opendata to:

  • View the data catalog with engineering information such as streets, property boundaries, water and sewer mains, transportation, communications fibre (QNet), aerial imagery, LiDAR and other layers;
  • Learn about Coquitlam’s neighbourhoods through the Official Community Plan and Community Profiles, with descriptions, maps;
  • Slide back in time with historical aerial photos;
  • Delve into the Integrated Watershed Management Plans for Coquitlam’s creeks and watersheds;
  • See who’s doing business in Coquitlam, and where, by searching the business licence map;
  • Access the interactive QtheMap, with its many City and property information layers; and
  • Look up parks, public Wi-Fi spots and more.

The portal will improve service to the public by reducing delays in accessing information and allowing people to conduct research at their own convenience. It also helps the City work more efficiently by reducing the staff time required to respond to requests.

Additional data will be added over time, such as, land development activity and additional financial information.  Requests for new data sets can be submitted through the open data portal.  The City vets all data through the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and other privacy legislation before posting it.

Coquitlam’s Technology Roadmap

An initiative of Coquitlam’s 2018-2022 Technology Roadmap, the open data project reflects the City’s ongoing focus on using technology to improve services and work more efficiently.

The Technology Roadmap outlines how the City chooses, acquires and uses technology in order to effectively meet current and future needs. Roadmap projects focus around improving citizen services and customer experience, developing smart transportation solutions, maintaining public safety and security, improving efficiency and productivity, empowering staff to be better, and leveraging data to be more efficient and effective.
