Coquitlam is offering homeowners a $100 rebate for updating their old water-guzzling toilets.
COQUITLAM, B.C., Oct. 27, 2021 – Coquitlam is offering homeowners a $100 rebate for updating their old water-guzzling toilets.
The City has launched a one-year Toilet Rebate Pilot Program that provides a $100 utility tax credit for replacing toilets that flush at least 13 litres of water with qualifying new single-flush or dual-flush models. Up to two toilet rebates will be accepted per residential property, and complete applications must be submitted within 90 days of the toilet purchase. For full program details please visit www.coquitlam.ca/toiletrebate.
Help Flush Away Less Drinking Water
Did you know that toilet flushing accounts for about a quarter of a home’s indoor water use? An average Coquitlam resident uses about 250 litres of water at home every day (approximately 63 four-litre milk jugs). In this region, that’s the same treated drinking water that comes from our mountain reservoirs to your household taps.
Part of Coquitlam’s 2021 Enhanced Water Conservation Strategy, the toilet rebate program will help conserve water and reduce the pressure on the City’s water and sewer system. The water savings from switching toilets is significant.
Old-style toilets can use at least seven to eight litres more per flush than newer models that come in 4.8L single-flush models and 4.1 to 6L dual-flush models. That represents a water use reduction of approximately 30 per cent per flush.
Older models also waste water through leaks – it is estimated that approximately 15 per cent of Coquitlam's water use (residential and non-residential) is wasted through leakages (e.g. through plumbing, service lines, dripping faucets, leaking hoses, etc.).
By replacing their remaining older toilets, Coquitlam residents will help support drinking water conservation.
How to Receive Your Rebate
The pilot rebate program is open to residential single-family and multi-family households with a City of Coquitlam utility account. All rebates will be credited to the household’s utility account.
To be eligible for the $100 rebate, applicants must:
- Purchase a new Canadian-certified toilet with a single-flush capacity of 4.8 litres or a dual-flush capacity of 4.1 to 6 litres.
- Provide photos and proof of purchase showing they are replacing an old toilet that has a flush volume of 13 litres or more with a qualifying new model.
- Submit the online application form within 90 days of purchasing the new toilet. Purchases made as of Oct. 11, 2021 will be accepted.
Up to two toilet rebates per household are eligible for the program. Learn more and apply online by visiting www.coquitlam.ca/toiletrebate or email waterconservation@coquitlam.ca or call 604-927-3546 with further questions.
