[ARCHIVED] New Chapter for Coquitlam Public Library’s Mobile Library

COQUITLAM, B.C., June 21, 2022 – The Coquitlam Public Library’s new and improved mobile library will be visiting Coquitlam neighbourhoods next year.

At Monday’s meeting, Council approved the purchase of a $636,000 replacement for the existing Coquitlam Public Library’s Library Link vehicle, which has reached the end of its life. Funding for the replacement will come from the City’s Land Sales Reserve Investment Fund. The Coquitlam Public Library (CPL) will continue to operate the vehicle, including determining the programs and collections offered through the Library Link.

New Vehicle Features Enhancements

The new vehicle will feature several enhancements, including a larger collection of space and storage; improved workspaces to allow for longer community stops; improved HVAC system and generator; and a hybrid electric booster to make the vehicle more environmentally-friendly.

The vehicle enhancements will allow the CPL to adjust collections more efficiently for different target audiences, to allow for the use of additional technology and tools, and to enable the vehicle to be used in more inclement weather. Due to its expertise in fleet and asset management, the City and the CPL have agreed that the City will own and maintain the vehicle as part of the City's fleet. The City provided the CPL an additional $30,000 in the 2022 budget to support ongoing operating costs associated with the Library Link.

Library Link Expands Reach of Traditional Libraries

Library Link – which first began operation in 2009 – brings library services directly to individuals who may have more difficulty reaching the physical library, including teens, young adults, persons with disabilities, people who cannot afford their own vehicle, and people who prefer to reduce their carbon footprint by walking or cycling.

The Library Link is also able to target growing neighbourhoods that are farther away from the CPL’s two branches, including Burquitlam and Burke Mountain.
