Coquitlam is offering homeowners a $100 rebate for updating their old water-guzzling toilets.
COQUITLAM, B.C., Aug. 31, 2022 – Coquitlam is offering homeowners a $100 rebate for updating their old water-guzzling toilets.
The City launched a Toilet Rebate Pilot Program in the fall of 2021 that provides a $100 utility tax credit for residents replacing inefficient toilets with qualifying new single-flush or dual-flush models.
Who Can Apply?
Residents living in Coquitlam who replace their 13 litre (3.5 gallon) toilet with a single-flush model that uses up to 4.8 litres or a dual-flush model that uses up to 4.1 to 6 litres (must also be Canadian certified as per BC Building Code regulations).
How to Apply?
It’s easy!
- Take a picture of your old toilet still installed.
- Take a picture of your old toilet removed with the tank cracked.
- Take a picture of your new toilet installed.
- Complete and submit the Toilet Rebate Application Form at www.coquitlam.ca/toiletrebate, along with pictures as listed above and purchase receipt for new toilet to: waterconservation@coquitlam.ca. (Must be submitted within 90 days of new toilet purchase date.)
- Dispose of your old toilet properly at the United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre, 955 United Blvd.
Up to two toilet rebates will be accepted per residential property, and complete applications must be submitted within 90 days of the toilet purchase.

Help Flush Away Less Drinking Water
Did you know that toilet flushing accounts for about a quarter of a home’s indoor water use? An average Coquitlam resident uses about 250 litres of water at home every day (approximately 63 4-litre milk jugs). In this region, that’s the same treated drinking water that comes from our mountain reservoirs to your household taps.
Part of Coquitlam’s 2021 Enhanced Water Conservation Strategy, the toilet rebate program will help conserve water and reduce the pressure on the City’s water and sewer system. The water savings from switching toilets is significant. Old-style toilets can use at least seven to eight litres more per flush than newer toilet models that come in 4.8L single-flush models and 4.1 to 6L dual flush models. That represents a water use reduction of approximately 30% per flush.
Older toilets also waste water through leaks – it is estimated that approximately 15% of Coquitlam's water use (residential and non-residential) is wasted through leakages (e.g. through plumbing, service lines, dripping faucets, leaking hoses, etc.).
By replacing older toilets, Coquitlam residents will help support drinking water conservation.

The Toilet Rebate Pilot Program is part of Coquitlam’s Enhanced Water Conservation Strategy, developed in 2021 to demonstrate regional leadership in drinking water conservation and one of the latest City initiatives in support of long-term environmental resiliency and sustainability.
