Help Flush Away Less Drinking Water
Did you know that toilet flushing accounts for about a quarter of a home’s indoor water use? An average Coquitlam resident uses about 250 litres of water at home every day (approximately 63 4-litre milk jugs). In this region, that’s the same treated drinking water that comes from our mountain reservoirs to your household taps.
Part of Coquitlam’s 2021 Enhanced Water Conservation Strategy, the toilet rebate program will help conserve water and reduce the pressure on the City’s water and sewer system. The water savings from switching toilets is significant. Old-style toilets can use at least seven to eight litres more per flush than newer toilet models that come in 4.8L single-flush models and 4.1 to 6L dual flush models. That represents a water use reduction of approximately 30% per flush.
Older toilets also waste water through leaks – it is estimated that approximately 15% of Coquitlam's water use (residential and non-residential) is wasted through leakages (e.g. through plumbing, service lines, dripping faucets, leaking hoses, etc.).
By replacing older toilets, Coquitlam residents will help support drinking water conservation.
Part of City’s Commitment to the Environment
The Toilet Rebate Pilot Program is part of Coquitlam’s Enhanced Water Conservation Strategy, developed in 2021 to demonstrate regional leadership in drinking water conservation and one of the latest City initiatives in support of long-term environmental resiliency and sustainability. It also aligns with the Environmental Sustainability Plan’s (ESP) Water Management goals and supporting strategies. For more information on Coquitlam’s ESP, visit coquitlam.ca/esp.
