Project Background
Buchanan Square, located on Burlington Drive between City Hall and the RCMP Building has been transformed into a more vibrant and welcoming community space with improvements that include:
- enhanced connectivity to City Hall and the RCMP building;
- new lighting;
- new seating, swing benches and picnic tables;
- shade structure;
- table games and slide;
- and plaza space for social connection, recreation and events.
Another feature of Buchanan Square is the community welcome that has been imprinted on the plaza in the top languages used in Coquitlam, as well as in hən̓q̓əmin̓em (the traditional language of the Kwikwetlem First Nation) and in braille.
The majority of the improvements were completed in spring 2021, with installation of the slide and shade structure area following in spring 2022.
The opportunity to improve the public space in Buchanan Square stemmed from a need to replace the roof of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Public Safety Building’s underground parkade, located beneath the square’s lower level.
While this important infrastructure work on the parkade membrane was taking place, Buchanan Square was transformed into space to allow for social connection, recreation and events.
