[ARCHIVED] Select Outdoor Amenities To Reopen Saturday

Coquitlam will be reopening select outdoor amenities where physical distancing can be maintained, while keeping playgrounds and sport courts closed at this time.

COQUITLAM, B.C., May 7, 2020 – Coquitlam will be reopening select outdoor amenities where physical distancing can be maintained, while keeping playgrounds and sport courts closed at this time.

As of Saturday, May 9, the locks will come off the City’s dog parks, outdoor tennis courts, skate parks, outdoor table games and park washrooms, more than six weeks after they were closed over concerns that users were not following the recommendations of B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer (PHO) to physically distance.

The City decided to reopen the amenities this week following encouraging reports from the PHO and indications that the public now better understands the public health measures needed to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Playgrounds and sport courts remain closed because of the difficulty of maintaining a safe distance in close quarters.

Measures in Place to Protect Public Health

The amenities and washrooms will be open from dawn to dusk. Washrooms will be cleaned twice a day, with an additional spot cleaning of touch points such as door and faucet handles.

Additionally – like other parks, trails and other public spaces across the City – the newly re-opened amenities will be monitored by Coquitlam’s Park Hosts to ensure COVID-19 health measures are followed, including:

  • Keeping at least two metres (six feet) away from people from other households;
  • Avoiding large groups;
  • Washing hands thoroughly and frequently;
  • Limiting time if it’s busy; and
  • Staying home if ill or exhibiting symptoms.

Signs reinforcing these safety measures will be posted at the sites.
