[ARCHIVED] Get Prepared During Emergency Preparedness Week

COQUITLAM, BC, May 4, 2020 – If recent events have taught us anything, it’s that crises definitely test our preparedness, and it is with that lens that Coquitlam supports this year’s Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week) from May 3–9.

While the COVID-19 pandemic have presented us a different type of emergency circumstance, it has also provided a strong reminder of the benefits of the knowledge and supplies necessary to better cope during an emergency.

During Emergency Preparedness Week, we are encouraging Coquitlam residents to take three simple steps to become better prepared to face a range of emergencies:

  1. Know the risks,
  2. Make a plan, and
  3. Get an emergency kit.

Know the Risks
Emergencies and disasters are usually unexpected, can occur at any time, interrupt your normal way of life and require immediate action. Emergencies are big and small and could be anything from an earthquake, to a severe winter storm, a spring flood, hazardous materials spills, a wildland fire or even an extended power outage.

Make a Plan
We encourage everyone to prepare a personal or family emergency plan. You and your family should know what to do if you are not together, as well as at home and be able take care of your basic needs for at least 72 hours following a disaster as help may not be able to get to you immediately.

  • Arrange an out-of-area contact person who lives outside our province who will not be affected by a major event, such as an earthquake. Make sure each family member has that person’s numbers with them all the time by completing an out-of-area contact card.
  • Ensure your family has an evacuation plan from your home that includes a safe family meeting place and make sure all family members know the plan.
  • Practice emergency drills and evacuation drills.

Get an Emergency Kit and Be Prepared
Have an emergency kit ready that includes basic supplies as well as essential items for babies, pets and any family members with special needs.

26 Weeks to Emergency Preparedness
To ensure your safety and well-being, and that of your family, use our 26 Weeks to Emergency Preparedness checklist. You can accomplish tasks once a week or every two weeks and within 6 months (or one year), you will be fully prepared. You can be a hero and help others in an emergency when you are prepared. Be a hero, be prepared!
