[ARCHIVED] Options Available as Recreation Facilities Remain Closed

While Coquitlam recreation facilities remain closed throughout May, free online options are available to stay active, healthy and connected.

COQUITLAM, B.C., May 4, 2020 – While Coquitlam recreation facilities remain closed throughout May, free online options are available to stay active, healthy and connected.

The City closed all recreation and community centres on Mar. 16 to protect the safety of the public and staff, and to help limit the spread of the novel coronavirus. The decision to extend the closure until May 31 follows a recent order by Fraser Health for all indoor gyms and fitness facilities to close, and reflects the continuing provincial ban on gatherings of more than 50 people.

Online Recreation Options Available

While facilities remain closed, Coquitlam staff have developed a range of free alternatives to continue to support the community and encourage physical distancing.

Registration kicks off today at www.coquitlam.ca/registration for the City’s first-ever registered online programs running in May and June.

Similar to the offerings at recreation facilities, the free programs listed in the Virtual Program Guide at www.coquitlam.ca/programguide provide opportunities for children, youth, adults and seniors to have fun, learn something new, improve their fitness and connect with others.

Offered for free as the City tests out the use of online tools, the programs will be conducted through the user-friendly Zoom online video conferencing platform. The intent is to simulate the experience offered by in-person programs, with set dates and times, live instruction and feedback, and the ability to ask questions and interact with other participants.

The City also recently launched its CoquitlamSPIRIT (www.coquitlam.ca/spirit) program with a library of free static and pre-recorded online content to help residents continue to stay active, healthy and connected their community.

Topics include fitness, the outdoors, arts and culture, community support and activities for children, youth, adults and 50-plus.

New content and CoquitlamSPIRIT initiatives will continue to be rolled out over time, centering around the themes of caring, connections and community to support residents through these challenging times.
