[ARCHIVED] Help Design the Future Sheffield Park

Coquitlam is collecting public feedback to help refine the recreation elements for a new family-friendly neighbourhood park coming to Burke Mountain in 2021.

COQUITLAM, B.C., Aug. 28, 2020 – Coquitlam is collecting public feedback to help refine the recreation elements for a new family-friendly neighbourhood park coming to Burke Mountain in 2021.

The City plans to start constructing the two-acre (0.81-hectare) Sheffield Park next spring near Chandler Street and Sheffield Avenue in the growing family-oriented neighbourhood of Smiling Creek.

The proposed concept – featuring fun spaces for children and youth, water play elements, washrooms, outdoor social space and other amenities – will be finalized into a detailed design this fall based on feedback from an online survey at www.letstalkcoquitlam.ca/sheffield, an online information session Wednesday, Sept. 9, and comments by phone or email.

Planning a New Neighbourhood Park for Smiling Creek

The Sheffield Park design will reflect the neighbourhood makeup – primarily young families – while bringing a mix of amenities to the area to complement existing recreational offerings such as playgrounds and enhance services such as water play.

The proposed concept, which can be viewed at www.coquitlam.ca/sheffield, uses the site’s slope to provide spectacular south-facing views. Features being considered include:

  • A play area designed for younger children (ages two to five) that could include a play structure, slide and sand play area;
  • A play area designed for older children (ages six to 11) that could include unique and  challenging slope play structures, swings and slide;
  • A multifunctional youth area (ages 11 and up) that could include a basketball hoop, ball hockey net, integrated skateable elements and terraced seating;
  • A water play area;
  • Table games such as table tennis and foosball for everyone to enjoy;
  • An accessible pathway system as well as several cardio circuit options;
  • Open lawn areas for picnicking and other informal uses; and
  • Gathering spaces, picnic tables and seating areas.

How to Have Your Say

While large in-person gatherings are banned and the City is not hosting public events at this time, the community has several options to learn more and comment on the proposed Sheffield Park concept, including:

Next Steps for Sheffield Park

After public feedback is collected, the design will be updated and presented to Council for approval early in 2021. Construction is anticipated to begin in March.

The total anticipated capital budget for the design and construction of Sheffield Park is $3.65 million. The capital funding is coming from developer contributions and Development Cost Charges associated with development in the neighbourhood.
