[ARCHIVED] Percy Perry Stadium Now Open after Upgrades

Numbered red running track and green turf field Walkers and runners can lace up their sneakers as Coquitlam’s Percy Perry Stadium at Town Centre Park is now re-open following upgrades.

COQUITLAM, B.C., Nov. 1, 2023 – Walkers and runners can lace up their sneakers as Coquitlam’s Percy Perry Stadium at Town Centre Park is now re-open following upgrades.

The facility closed temporarily last spring in order for crews to complete a full replacement of the rubber track and the artificial turf field. In addition to being Coquitlam’s preeminent sports-hosting venue, the track is also a much-loved spot for casual runners and walkers. Casual users and sports groups will be able to enjoy the new and improved surface as of Wednesday, November 1.

About Percy Perry Stadium

Originally built in 1991, Percy Perry Stadium Stadium is Coquitlam’s premier outdoor sports facility and a key amenity in Town Centre Park. In addition to featuring a wide breadth of track and field amenities including throwing area, long-jump and high-jump, the stadium is also a popular facility for recreational walkers and runners. The track also hosts an average of 20 track meets annually and is home to the Coquitlam Cheetahs Track and Field Club.

Mariner Park Tennis Courts Also Re-opening After Improvements

Coquitlam’s longest-standing tennis courts at Mariner Park also have a fresh new look and are open for play following the completion of recent upgrades.

Improvements include the removal of the existing courts, installation of upgraded drainage, new tennis courts and chain link fencing. Due to weather restrictions, city staff will complete the final colour coating on the courts in the spring of 2024. Temporary tennis and pickleball lines have been applied.

As part of the City’s Sports Court Program, the project received $250,000 in funding from the Canada Community-Building Fund (formerly the Gas Tax Fund) towards the completion of the project.

These improvements align with the goals of the Tennis and Pickleball Services and Facilities Strategy 2017 – 2037. For more information, visit coquitlam.ca/tennis.

Coquitlam’s Commitment to Asset Improvement

Recognizing that Coquitlam residents place a high importance on parks, recreation and culture amenities, and in line with the City’s commitment to maintaining these valuable assets, upgrades to the Percy Perry Stadium and the Mariner Park tennis courts were identified as a need for 2023.

The City completed the stadium track renewal and artificial turf replacement at the same time in order to maximize cost efficiencies and limit disruption to these key recreational amenities. Completion of the replacement work at both facilities ensures that the amenities remain of a high standard for our public to use, and the stadium upgrades will allow Percy Perry Stadium to continue to be Coquitlam’s top outdoor sports-hosting venue for years to come.

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (HUN-kuh-MEE-num) word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-KWET-lum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the q̓ic̓əy̓ (kat-zee), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
